What is a Trading Licence?

  • A Trading Licence is a licence issued under the Trades Licensing Ordinance 1948, Cap 144.  Generally, a Trading Licence is a document which qualifies a person to carry out a business in accordance with the type of businesses specified in the licence.

Who can apply for a Trading Licence?

  • The applicant must be at least 18 years old, and must be local or permanent resident of Sabah.

Does the applicant need to apply in person?

  • The applicant is encouraged to personally apply for the Trading Licence, except for the case of a company or firm.

How to apply for a Trading Licence?

  • The applicant must complete the application form for Trading Licence.  The application Form A can be obtained from the Licensing Counter at the Licensing Section, Kota Kinabalu City Hall Headquarters.  The form costs RM1.00.

  • A certified true copy (by commissioner of oaths) of the applicant's identity card must be attached with the application.

  • The applicant should also produce:

    • House/Building Assessment Statement indicating settlement of payment of the assessment rate to Kota Kinabalu City Hall.

    • Tenancy Agreement/Sales & Purchase Agreement or Letter of Consent concerning the premise in which the trade or business will be carried out.

  • The completed application form shall be submitted to the Licensing Counter.

What is the fee payable?

  • According to the First Schedule (Section 7(1)), Trades Licensing Ordinance 1948, Cap 144, the Trading Licence fee is RM25.00 per year.  A processing fee of RM5.00 is also charged.

How long does it take to get the Trading Licence issued?

  • It takes five (5) working days to get the Trading Licence

What is the validity period of the Trading Licence?

  • All Trading Licences expire on the 31st day of December. 

How to renew the Trading Licence?

  • To renew a Trading Licence, the applicant must complete a simplified renewal form which can be obtained from the Licensing Counter at the cost of RM1.00

Should the Trading Licence be displayed at the trading premise?

  • According to Section 12(2), Trades Licensing Ordinance 1948, Cap 144 every Trading Licence must be displayed within the trading/business premise at a place where it can be easily seen.
